Grenada Pioneers Cannabis Reform with Decriminalization and Medical Production Initiatives

Grenada is set to make strides in cannabis policy by potentially adopting a decriminalization measure this year, aiming to modernize its approach towards cannabis. This move is not just about decriminalizing personal use and cultivation in certain instances but also about introducing regulated medical cannabis production.

The Caribbean island is looking to broaden its economic spectrum and stimulate growth by legalizing the production of specific medical cannabis products and allowing limited personal possession and cultivation. This initiative is particularly geared towards providing for the Rastafarian community, allowing the possession of up to five plants or 24 grams of cannabis.

Globally, many countries have developed comprehensive medical cannabis programs that enable the production and sale of various cannabis forms through dispensaries or pharmacies. Grenada's approach seems to focus on pharmaceutical-grade medical cannabis products, specifically targeting isolated cannabinoids like cannabidiol (CBD), a path already taken by numerous countries.

However, what stands out in Grenada's proposal is the allowance for personal possession and cultivation. The proposed limits exceed those of Luxembourg, where the law permits adults to grow up to four plants and possess up to three grams. This aspect of Grenada's policy could have a more profound impact on public policy, indicating a shift towards more liberal cannabis laws within the region.
